About The Mikado – Lytham Hall
Illyria will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta The Mikado on Sunday 20 August at 6.00 at Lytham Hall and will come to the town as part of their two month summer tour which opened at Chepstow Castle on July 21.
Gilbert and Sullivan were the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice of their day, producing a succession of eagerly anticipated hit shows. The Mikado was their most popular comic opera, running for two years at the Savoy Theatre.
Within a year 150 theatre companies had put on a production of The Mikado which is famed for the superb variety of Sullivan’s music, as well as some of Gilbert’s most witty and waspish lyrics.
Illyria’s colourful, energetic and inventive way of presenting Gilbert and Sullivan in the 21st century is a real eye-opener, as their cast of six and a musical director on keyboards produce a show to appeal to all ages.
