About The Sorcerer

Marton Operatic Society

The Sorcerer

In the well-ordered village of Ploverleigh the villagers celebrate the marriage of Alexis to Aline, son and daughter of the local gentry. Nostalgia hangs in the air.

Despite his upper-class connections Alexis believes all should be coupled in matrimony without distinction of age, rank or fortune. He hires a “respectable” sorcerer to bring this about through a love potion. Now magic is in the air !

The results are interesting – and not entirely convenient. Somehow or other, things need returning to what they were…

The Sorcerer was the first full-length collaboration between the most famous theatrical team of all time, W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Gilbert’s wonderful way with words brings out the satire on class distinctions and Sullivan’s full range of ingenious music is on display – at times catchy and lively, at other times soulful and moving or eerily supernatural.

The comic operas of Gilbert & Sullivan are tuneful fun for all the family
