Securing his name in the R&B history books, Alexander O'Neal is one of the genres most iconic names. With chart smash 'Criticize' lighting up dance floors across the world thirty years after its release, his sound has transcended generations.
O’Neal, who first rose to fame in 1985 with his self-titled debut album, which included three singles that reached the Top 20 of the R&B Singles Chart. Three years later he released Hearsay, possibly his most well-known album, especially in the UK, as it peaked at No. 4 on the UK Album Charts in that year, going on to certify as triple platinum, and having seven charting singles.
The single ‘Criticize’ from Hearsay is still lighting up dancefloors to this day, thirty years after its release, owing to O’Neal’s talents as a musician, and to R&B's continued influence on popular and contemporary culture.
Signed by Prince back in the early days as part of ‘The Time’ his journey in and out of various band formations propelled him to be the solo artist that we know him for today.
O’Neal’s music has garnered a cult appreciation around the globe, with a stunning ten albums, six compilations, and two live albums released over an incredible career spanning more than forty years.
O’Neal’s appearance marks a newfound direction in his musicality, incorporating more soul and blues into his emblematic R&B sound. It’s a maturation that fans are sure to love.
With the release of his tell-all, blockbuster autobiography in early 2017, and a 50 date UK tour to celebrate 30 years of the iconic Hearsay album, aptly named Hearsay30, it is safe to say that fans cannot get enough of the stalwart of R&B that hails from Minneapolis.
