A 'stunning' one woman show inspired by Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia!
On the morning of 5th may 1930, a small green Gipsy Moth bi-plane took off from Croydon Aerodrome on a record breaking and thrilling solo flight to Australia. This flight captured the imagination of the world and made an international superstar of ground engineer and pilot, Amy Johnson.
2025 is the 95th anniversary of of Amy's astounding achievement and her story is as relevant and exciting as ever.
Born in the year the Wright Brothers made their first flight, Amy Johnson grew up in an age in which the romantic heights of flying would capture her heart and she would become the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. She lived her life for adventure and the future of aviation.
In January 1941, at just 37 years old, Amy was killed while serving her country on a routine flight for the Air Transport Auxiliary, bailing out into the Thames Estuary over Herne Bay
In her short life this ‘lone girl flier’ achieved much in the face of huge challenge.
In this show, we meet Amy in a world of memories, desires, wishes and ambitions and as we find out about her life we start to see how the pieces fit and the tools Amy used to engineer her dreams to reality....
The show celebrates Amy Johnson , who in her own words was, 'an ordinary woman who did extraordinary things'.
The show is 1hr ten minutes long followed by an interval then a post-show discussion Q&A.
This performance and accompanying morning plane making workshop for younger participants are part of the 'Flying High tour' supported by Arts Council England.
Mixing performance, discussion and community workshops the tour is exploring aspiration and introducing Amy's incredible story to new audiences.
