It’s September 1939 and evacuation of children from London has started. Willie Beech is evacuated to a tiny English village in the country just before the outbreak of World War II. A lonely and deprived child with an insufferable home life, he finds himself living with the reclusive, gruff old widower, Thomas Oakley. Although the two find it hard to adjust to their life together at first, they gradually form an unlikely friendship and Willie begins to enjoy life and make new friends in the village. Willie is suddenly recalled to London by his neglectful and abusive mother. After several weeks with no letter from Willie, Tom Oakley becomes concerned for his welfare and sets out to London in search of him, what he finds angers Tom and breaks his heart, but makes him determined to help the boy he has come to love like a son as much as he can.
Michelle Magorian's superbly written and deeply moving classic wartime story adapted for stage by David Wood is wonderfully brought to life by the talented young actors of NW1 Drama Company.
