War Stories: Armistice Day Folk Show with Harp & a Monkey
To mark Armistice Day (Monday, November 11), our folk club at the Lowther Pavilion is delighted to announce a special performance by the award-winning modern folk song and storytelling trio Harp & a Monkey.
The Lancashire outfit have agreed to perform their acclaimed ‘War Stories’ show that was originally commissioned by the Arts Council and Western Front Association to mark the centenary of the First World War.
This unique and acclaimed performance will feature sound recordings of people who lived through the Great War, traditional and original songs about lesser-known aspects of the conflict and humorous and poignant tales (many of them local) by band frontman and respected WW1 historian Martin Purdy.
The band only perform this show in full a handful of times each year, so this is a rare chance to see why It has continued to garner huge critical acclaim since its first appearance - and why the likes of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission get them to perform it annually at their largest British cemetery in Surrey.
Here are just some of things to have been said about the ‘War Stories’ show… “Bold and brilliant” (The Observer); “Courageous, demanding and ultimately satisfying.” (FolkRadioUK); “A unique and unmissable sonic monument.” (RootsWorld, USA); “The most beautiful songs ever made on this theme.” (AltCountry, Germany); “Excellent.” (The Guardian); “Brilliant.” (BBC Radio 2 Folk Show).
